Doctor of Pharmacy Program > Transfer Admission Policy

The University of Oklahoma (OU) College of Pharmacy occasionally receives inquiries regarding the possibility of transfers from other colleges of pharmacy or from individuals holding a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy who wish to enter the Doctor of Pharmacy program. The purpose of this is policy is to guide the response to such requests.

Transfer of students from another College of Pharmacy:

Any inquiries from students from another college of pharmacy who wish to transfer to the OU College of Pharmacy will be referred to the Office of Student Affairs. A potential transfer student must:

  1. Submit a letter requesting the transfer from the current program and including the reason for the request.
  2. Provide a letter from the dean’s office of the school in which the student is currently enrolled. This letter should certify that the applicant is in good academic standing and may serve as one of the three letters of reference required by the OU College of Pharmacy.
  3. Supply a copy of the curricular requirements in the program in which the student is enrolled, including formal course descriptions for all work completed and in which the student is enrolled at the time. This information is vital to determine comparability with our college’s professional program.
  4. Submit an official OUHSC application form with payment of all applicable fees, three letters of reference, and any other required information. (Application on-line may not be appropriate if a transfer is requested for a time other than the beginning of the academic year in the fall semester.)
  5. Provide transcripts of all college and university coursework completed, including coursework in which the student is enrolled at the time of the request, if any.
  6. Be available for a personal interview with the OU College of Pharmacy.

Admission with Advanced Standing:

Admission of individuals with advanced standing is not encouraged by the OU College of Pharmacy. However, exceptions may be considered in certain cases where the individual has earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, or when personal circumstances have forced the individual to withdraw from another college of pharmacy. In such cases, any previous training in pharmacy must have been conducted within five years of applying for admission. This requirement may be waived if the applicant can provide evidence of post- baccalaureate college work (e.g., graduate coursework) or professional employment as a pharmacist within the past five years.

Any inquiries from students for advanced standing in the OU College of Pharmacy will be referred to the Office of Student Affairs. A potential advanced standing student must:

  1. Submit a letter requesting admission for advanced standing and detailing all previous training in the field of pharmacy, work experience, other college coursework, and the reason that the Pharm.D. degree is desired.
  2. Provide a letter from the dean’s office of the applicant’s former school. This letter should certify that the applicant completed the B.S. Pharmacy degree or left the school in good academic standing, and it may serve as one of the three letters of reference required by the OU College of Pharmacy.
  3. Supply copies of the curricular requirements for the former program, including formal course descriptions for all work completed.
  6. Be available for a personal interview with the College.

Review of applications for Transfer or Advanced Standing Students:

If there is available capacity in the program, applications for transfer or admission with advanced standing will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Pharmacy. This committee will include representation from the Admissions Committee, the Academic Standings Committee, and the Curriculum Committee. If this initial review determines that the applicant merits continued consideration, an interview with the ad hoc committee will be scheduled.

Following the interview, the ad hoc committee will provide a recommendation about the applicant to the Dean of the College of Pharmacy. A recommendation for admission must specify the curriculum to be taken. College requirements for each transfer student will be individualized.

Required coursework:

All students who receive the Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy will generally be required to complete Pharmaceutical Care Modules II through X. Practicums during the fourth professional year are required for all students but may be modified if warranted by professional experience acquired by the applicant.

Required coursework may be waived if the applicant has taken comparable instruction from another college and earned a grade of C or above in these courses. The ad hoc committee may require that the applicant audit certain courses when their previous instruction may not have included pertinent material or if considerable time has elapsed since the coursework was completed.

Transfer of students from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy to another College of Pharmacy:

The personal circumstances of students at the OU College of Pharmacy occasionally require that they transfer to another school. In such cases, the College will provide academic records, a description of coursework completed, and a statement of academic standing to the school to which the student wishes to transfer.
